Professor Dr. Edwin Laermann († August 9, 2018)

Professor Dr. Edwin Laermann, one of the founding members of the Bielefeld Graduate School in Theoretical Sciences (BGTS), passed away on August 9, 2018. Prof. Laermann was an enthusiastic supporter and facilitator of interdisciplinary research and education and a vital contributor in the process of building the BGTS. The International Research Training School ‘Quantum Fields and Strongly Interacting Matter’, of which Prof. Laermann was the spokesperson from 2003-2012, was one of the founding pillars of the BGTS initiative and his support as Dean of the Faculty of Physics from 2013-2015 was crucial in establishing this interdisciplinary Graduate School. After the official foundation of the BGTS in 2015 Prof. Laermann has been a member of its Executive Board and he also has been Principal Investigator in several BGTS-related projects. The Bielefeld Graduate School in Theoretical Sciences mourns the loss of a great colleague, researcher and teacher and is grateful for his contributions to graduate education and the collaboration between Physics, Mathematics and related fields.
